WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM ME?

Beginner/Novice Surfers

Being a surfer takes more than just walking around with a board under your arm and talking like Keanu Reeves in Point Break.  As Pappas, his FBI partner in the film points out “to become a surfer you gotta get out there in the water.”  So from the first day your lessons will be conducted in waist-deep water, after practice on the beach.  These lessons will usually take place at Legian Beach or Jimbaran Beach, both white sand beaches and favourites of sun-worshippers.  Techniques such as catching the white wave can be learnt in 20 minutes and I would expect you to be up on your feet on the first day.  In the first few sessions you’ll experience riding white water waves and learn basic manoeuvres.  In your later sessions, you’ll be taking off on almost unbroken waves.  But ultimately, I’ll be working at your speed.  Each session is 2.5 hours long.  I would recommend taking at least 4 sessions to give you good surfing foundations.  I have a limit of 5  students per lesson, so that you’ll always get the full attention you need.

Lessons cost 300,000 Indonesia Rupiah (approx. US $30) per person, per day.  Discounts are available for groups of 5 or more.

Intermediate/Progressing Surfers

For an intermediate surfer, what the lesson involves will be a mix of what you want to learn and what skills I think you need.  Typically this means identifying “bad” habits and correcting them, perfecting manoeuvres where there are weaknesses andprobably the most importantrefining your ability to read waves so that your judgment of which wave to catch, when a wave is about to peel, when it’s about to close out, where to place yourself in the lineup, etc. improves.  Progressing through these elements will take your surfing to a whole new level.  Depending on your age and general level of fitness, I recommend you spend at least 2 hours surfing a day to maximise the potential for improvement so generally each session is 2.5 hours long.  I usually hold classes at Canggu and Padang-Padang (Impossibles).  These are white sand beaches with consistent reef breaks that are more accessible for intermediates than other reef breaks.  I have a limit of 5 students per lesson, so that you will get the full attention you need to improve your surfing skills.

Lessons cost 300,000 Indonesia Rupiah (approx. US $30) per person, per day.  Discounts are available for groups of 5 or more.

Experienced Surfers

Surf surfari is a great option for more experienced surfers or progressing surfers that are ready for a challenge.  Bali is packed with great surf spots.  Every day there is a different swell, a different wind etc. so every day (or every few days—you decide!) I’ll take you to a different location to score epic surf.  Safaris will often include Bingin (perfect barrel), Impossibles (long screaming rides), Dreamland (perfect A frame left & rights) and Padang-Padang (Balinese pipeline).  Easy drives will get us to the world famous Uluwatu or the more mellow Balangan.  But the fact is there are many other waves to be surfed with fewer crowds and often better quality waves, which should be explored.  With a safari guide, the guess work and language barriers are taken out of the equation no matter where you are on the island, and you can focus on what you came for—catching the most memorable rides of your life.

You can do a full day surf safari, a half-day safari with a cultural tour, or a mixture of both if you are planning to take a few days of surf safari.

I have a limit of 4 people per day.

Surf safaris cost 500,000 Indonesia Rupiah (approx. US $50) per person, per day.  Cost of additional transportation, eg. boat hire to ocean reefs, will also be added.

WHAT IF IT’S FLAT?

The island’s rich cultural heritage is visible everywhere—in over 20,000 temples and palaces, in many colorful festivals and ceremonies, in drama, music, and dance.  So on the rare days when the surf is no good, the best thing you can do is to take an excursion or guided tour to experience more of Bali.  You can arrange to do this with a tour company but it would be my pleasure to take you around Bali myself and where we go will depend entirely on your tastes and how much time you have.  And as I am a Balinese Hindu I would be happy to take you to places where you can get a sense of our culture and appreciate the meaning behind our many ceremonies.  Most often a day trip includes Bali’s rice terraces, Besakih Temple on Mount Agung, Lake Batur and its active volcano, Ubud, and the temples of Tanah Lot and Uluwatu.
